Coming April 8, 2023 Pam Vestal - Professional Genealogist, author and speaker - Was Your Ancestor Truly Gone or Just Hidden Within the Records?

Why haven't you found your ancestors in the records?  Documents are often hidden from view, with information that is present but concealed, stored in a place or a manner that is unexpected, misspelled, indexed incorrectly, or separated from the other similar records.  We'll explore strategies for tracking down these elusive ancestors so that we don't miss a single detail.

Pam Vestal is a full-time genealogist and lecturer in Linn, Oregon whose research extends far beyond the Pacific Northwest, with clients all over the U.S. and research that reaches beyond our borders. Pam is the owner of the website generationsgen.com .

Pam has given presentations at the National Genealogical Society and is a favorite speaker of many societies all over the US. Her publications include articles featured in the Association of Professional Genealogists Quarterly and the Federation of Genealogists Forum Magazine.

February Program - Stephen P. Morse - The 1950 Census: A Year Later

The 1950 Census was released on April 1, 2022, after being sealed for 72 years. Since the release date, many of us have tried to find records in the census and have run into various quirks. This presentation will discuss the things that we have learned since opening day.

The specific topics covered are searching the census by name and what was involved in creating a searchable name index, searching the census by location and the various websites that have tools to support this, confusion between census sheets and census pages, transient handling and the Individual Census Reports, and the cross-referencing that was done if nobody was home when the census taker came to call.

Registration is open - November Program - Resources from your family tree for your family story - Linda Colton

Stories of your ancestors, wouldn't you love to have some?  Most of us don't have written stories of our distant family, as much as we long to know what their lives were like.  Our class will demonstrate how to write these stories yourself, using sources that are probably already attached to your family tree!  Learn how to use census records, vital records, newspaper stories, cemeteries, and social/geographical/military history to write interesting stories of your family.  We will take apart a story showing where each element came from, and share some tips on how to not only make your stories interesting, but fun ways to share them with your family.~Linda

Our Founding Members - 45 Years - Founded July 9, 1977

It's been 45 years since this group of ladies got together to research and share their family history. Thanks to them many families have been brought to together, recorded in history and  burning the midnight oil for that one clue or record that connects them to a unknown part of the family.

Yes, genealogy can be a curse and frustrating, but at the same time it is exciting and rewarding following our ancestors lives and gaining a broad view of history past. Some of these ladies have passed on and are no longer with us but their families history will live on for future generations to continue the quest. .

He's Back! Stephen P. Morse - The 1950 Census: Searching With or Without a Name Index

The 1950 Census: Searching With or Without a Name Index

Steve Morse is the creator of the One-Step Website, for which he has received both the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Outstanding Contribution Award from IAJGS, the Award of Merit from the National Genealogical Society, the first ever Excellence Award from the Association of Professional Genealogists, and two awards that he cannot pronounce from Polish genealogical societies. In his other life Morse is a computer professional with a doctorate degree in electrical engineering. He has held various research, development, and teaching positions, authored numerous technical papers, and written four textbooks and holds four patents.

When the 1950 census is released in April 2022, it will not have a name index. So finding people in the census will involve searching by location instead. Even when a name index becomes available, there will still be many reasons for doing locational searches. The census is organized by Enumeration Districts (EDs), so a location needs to be converted to an ED before the census can be accessed. The One-Step website contains numerous tools for obtaining EDs. This talk will present the various tools and show circumstances in which each can be used.
