Registration now open for The 1950 Census: Searching with or without a Name Index - Stephen P. Morse

When the 1950 census is released in April 2022, it will not have a name index. So finding people in the census will involve searching by location instead. Even when a name index becomes available, there will still be many reasons for doing locational searches. The census is organized by Enumeration Districts (EDs), so a location needs to be converted to an ED before the census can be accessed. The One-Step website contains numerous tools for obtaining EDs. This talk will present the various tools and show circumstances in which each can be used.

Steve Morse is the creator of the One-Step Website, for which he has received both the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Outstanding Contribution Award from IAJGS, the Award of Merit from the National Genealogical Society, the first ever Excellence Award from the Association of Professional Genealogists, and two awards that he cannot pronounce from Polish genealogical societies. In his other life Morse is a computer professional with a doctorate degree in electrical engineering. He has held various research, development, and teaching positions, authored numerous technical papers, and written four textbooks and holds four patents.

A Step Back

It was our hope to present our meetings and program in person in September unfortunately,  a turn in the Covid and area bridge maintenance has put us back to online meetings and programs. We know this is disappointing but for the safety of our members and guests we deem it necessary.  The Dalles Bridge work through the winter will have a great impact with our Washington members and given the upsurge in the Covid virus we feel we have made the right decision.  We will be meeting on line starting September 11,  2021 with a historical and genealogical overview of John S. Woodruff, the hermit of the cave. Mr. Woodruff was a historical figure in the Dalles and his life and family will be presented by Georga Foster.

The online program will begin at 11:00 am. Instructions and invites to follow.

Please check our blog page for schedules and announcements.

Program for September 2021 - The Hermit of the Cave - John S. Woodruff - His Life and Family

Part genealogical and part historical, this program looks at the life of a local historical figure that resided in a cave above the St. Peters Catholic Chruch around the beginning of the 20th century. Many have wondered why he led such a recluse life and many stories have been told of lone existence and citizenship. We will look into his past, his ancestors, his own family, a wife and 3 children and shed  some light on the fabled John Woodruff.

September 11, 2021

11:00am - 12:00pm - Columbia Gorge Discovery Center - downstairs classroom.

The program will be presented by Georga Foster

This program is now scheduled for Sept, 11, 2021 and it will be via Zoom.

In person meetings and programs resume in September!

In person programs and meetings are scheduled to resume Sept. 11, 2021

if the Covid status continues to improve.

Otherwise we will be meeting virtually online with Zoom.

Our society meets the second Saturday of each month at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center

from  10:30 to 12:00pm. Membership is for all ages and and our meetings and programs are

open to the public and free. We do ask a $1.00 donation to cover room rental.

For more information please email us at gorgegenealogical@gmail.com

Membership applications are on this page to the right as is our monthly schedule.

How have you been adding to your research skills during the lockdown?

The past year has been challenging for genealogists and historians. Closed libraries, museums, and institutions have made researching difficult. What have we learned by this devastating event?

Before the lockdown we were aware of electronic platforms of communication but not all of us embraced it as we have learned to do as of today. Now we are using these communication skills on a daily basis.

The internet, which can be a good source of course doesn't have everything we need for our researching but we can use it to find places in which to look for information "sources" needed to answer questions and queries. Museums, libraries, institutions and organizations have stepped up too to offer free webinars and programs to help their followers keep current on events and available study.

As for genealogy webinars we have researched and passed on webinar information to you which we believe you maybe interested in and help you gain more knowledge from. Our favorite national speakers and genealogy societies  have also offered free and open to the public events via Zoom and Microsoft Teams.

We will continue to pass on webinar and virtual programing information to our members and anyone that is interested in genealogy and history research. These two go hand in hand when gathering your family history.

For a comprehensive list of webinars and genealogy based events , ConferenceKeeper  is a very good resource.  This week they added 60 events to their calendar and you can sign up for their email schedule for new posts and events.

https://conferencekeeper.org/

The Genealogical Forum of Oregon has a comprehensive schedule also. You can sign up for their online newsletters or visit their site for upcoming events. They also off several data bases free online as well.

https://gfo.org/

Handouts from past speaker events are available at :

https://gfo.org/learn/handouts.html

These are just a few places were you can find a webinar or program that may interest you.  We will continue to keep you informed and  updated on events till we can personally be together.

Great news for genealogists and historians! Seattle NARA Archives Saved!

The Biden administration has halted the sale of the federal archives building in Seattle, following months of opposition from people across the Pacific Northwest and a lawsuit by the Washington Attorney General's Office.

A federal judge had already blocked the sale, pending a lawsuit by Washington, Oregon and more than two dozen Native American and Alaska Native tribes. All eight senators from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska opposed the sale, and Murray and Cantwell had been pushing the Biden administration to halt it.
