January 6, 2024 - America's Extension Service - Record Sources for Genealogy - Georga Foster

Extension Service roots began after the Revolutionary War and has continued to educate and provide services to families to this day. The history of the service and what collateral organizations will be discussed in this program. Records provide family locations and their social history backgrounds as well as geographical records of communities. Federal records began in 1888 and are recorded at NARA. What acts of Congress are responsible for funding? What benefits did your community receive during major events of war and natural disasters?

October 14, 2023 - FRIENDLY RELATIONS – Finding American Quakers and their Online Records - presented by Steven W. Morrison

In 1750 the Quaker religion was the third largest in the colonies. So, if you have an English sounding surname, a dead-end pointing the British Isles or Ireland, and if your kin could have arrived before the American Revolution … well you could be looking for a Friend (Quaker)! Learn about the Quakers and their meticulous record keeping, now available online.

Steven Waltz Morrison is a past-president of the Puget Sound Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists and the Olympia Genealogical Society. He attained a Master’s degree from The Evergreen State College where he taught for seven years as an adjunct faculty. Quaker records are Steven’s area of expertise. In 2018 he coordinated a Quaker course at the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG), in 2020 co-coordinated a virtual course for the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP), and will coordinate Discovering Quaker Records - In the US and the British Isles at 2023 SLIG Fall Virtual. Presenter at a National Genealogical Society conference, Steven has addressed international audiences on Quaker topics at the Ulster American Heritage Symposium in Omagh, Ireland & Toronto, Canada, and the Yearly Meeting of Friends in Ireland. In 2016, the American Society of Genealogists awarded him their Scholar Award

This is a free presentation and the public is invited. You must register however to participate.

June 7, 2023 - Randol B. Flectcher - Historian, author and lecturer - Civil War History In The Columbia Gorge

Randol B. Fletcher, the author of Hidden History of Civil War Oregon, will speak on the state of the U.S. military at the start of the Civil War, the formation of Oregon volunteer regiments that replaced the Federal troops withdrawn from Oregon. He will talk about Oregonians who served in the war including Sen. Edward D. Baker and a little known cavalry unit known as Olney’s 40 Thieves that patrolled the Columbia River Gorge. He will also be available for questions and answers.

Randy, a lifelong student of history, is a fifth-generation Oregonian born and raised in Albany. He graduated from the University of Oregon with degrees in history and political science. Fletcher has been Civil War reenacting since 2003 and is often joined on his adventures by his wife, Karen, and their children, Andrew and Allison. As a member, and past camp commander, of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Fletcher began researching the lives of Oregon Civil War soldiers while leading cemetery restoration projects in Eugene, Corvallis and Portland. His research led him to write a series of Civil War-themed articles for Oregon Magazine. Other publications where Fletcher's work has appeared include Columbia Magazine and The Banner.
