Registration is open - November Program - Resources from your family tree for your family story - Linda Colton

Stories of your ancestors, wouldn't you love to have some? Most of us don't have written stories of our distant family, as much as we long to know what their lives were like. Our class will demonstrate how to write these stories yourself, using sources that are probably already attached to your family tree! Learn how to use census records, vital records, newspaper stories, cemeteries, and social/geographical/military history to write interesting stories of your family. We will take apart a story showing where each element came from, and share some tips on how to not only make your stories interesting, but fun ways to share them with your family.~Linda

Linda Colton is a long time member of the Columbia Gorge Genealogical Society and has spent many years researching and educating the genealogical community. Linda has held many offices in the CGGS and is currently the Secretary of CGGs.

Linda has taught classes and organized family history forums for the FHC in Hood River as a librarian and was lead coordinator for the Family History Centers in the Gorge area. Linda also won the outstanding volunteer achievement award from the Washington State Genealogical Society.

The program will highlight the history of the Metsker family and its contribution to mapping and recording residential history in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Northern California .Metsker Map Company and its 5 generations of family members put the Northwest "ON THE MAP!

Also, we will present a little and underused feature of Historic Mapworks website. This website is the home of Metsker landowner based maps.

Stephen Morse is here again to help with this difficult and frustrating problem

Stephen p. Morse is back with us again LIVE to guide us through a very common and more than likely a frustrating experience, creating a genealogy with little or no information on your ancestral subject. Stephen has been with us live regularly since last year with his 1950 census presentations and to guide us through his invaluable website , One-Step Webpage.

Stephen Morse is the creator of the One-Step Website for which he has received both the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Outstanding Contribution Award from the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies, Award of Merit from the National Genealogical Society, first-ever Excellence Award from the Association of Professional Genealogists, and two awards that he cannot pronounce from Polish genealogical societies.

In his other life Morse is a computer professional with a doctorate degree in electrical engineering. He has held various research, development, and teaching positions, authored numerous technical papers, written four textbooks, and holds four patents. He is best known as the architect of the Intel 8086 (the granddaddy of today's Pentium processor), which sparked the PC revolution 40 years ago.

June meeting - Long awaited get together!

Dear Members,

Its been over 2 years since we have met in person and enjoyed each others company.

Join us for a no-host lunch and commemorate 45 years of genealogical achievement.

In 1977 a handful of ladies got together to discuss their family history and and this started an

organization that has brought hundreds of families the knowledge to achieve connecting

ancestors and record their family beginnings.

Genealogy is a rewarding science and a fun and challenging hobby.

The Columbia Gorge Genealogical Society embraces 5 counties in the Columbia Gorge area.

Pioneers of The West

Header Photo: Helen Lundeberg created this painting while employed by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), a New Deal program that employed artists during the Great Depression. Like other WPA artists, Lundeberg depicted a hopeful view of the United States during a time of turmoil and uncertainty by showing a dreamlike image of western expansion. The group of pioneers, with their backs to the viewer, follows an ox-drawn wagon into a valley. The monumental figures appear strong and assured in their forward progress. Rising mountains melt into the sun. Lundeberg's style of mixing fantastic images with reality is evident in the background: The pink, rolling mountains blend into the orange, pink, and bluish haze of the sky; it is difficult to determine where the mountains end and the sky begins. The careful use of space and dreamlike elements in Pioneers of the West is representative of Lundeberg's postsurrealist style. This movement, derived from surrealism, purposely combined fantasy with reality and was predominantly found on the West Coast.
