Good Reads for the Genealogist

These cold foggy and dark days of winter deserves a cup of coffee, a warm fire, a cozy chair and most of all a great book in hand. If you own a Kindle or Nook or even that matter if you don't, there are two books at Amazon. Com that are both entertaining and educational.

The first, Reunion-A search for Ancestors by Ryan Littrell , offers a great story. It rates a 5 star on Amazons Genealogy list. Its a combination of  the history of Scotland and how-to genealogy. He tracks his research , travels and it very well written.

About:

An anonymous letter reveals the first clues about his family's origins, and soon those clues take him to country graveyards, long-lost cousins, and a shocking DNA discovery. And as one hint follows the next, he uncovers the story of his Scottish ancestors--a tale of heartbreak, betrayal, and unfailing strength.

A real-life account, Reunion shows how our ancestors are still a part of us, and how a place across the ocean can almost feel like home.

The second  book or I should say set of books are written by Steve Robinson. Steve writes books on crime, suspense mystery with a genealogical slant and twist. The three books, The Last Queen of England, In the Blood and To The Grave are extremely entertaining and educational.

About:

In the Blood-

Family history was never supposed to be like this...

When American genealogist, Jefferson Tayte, accepted his latest assignment he had no idea it might kill him. But while murder was never part of the curriculum he is kidding himself if he thinks he can walk away from this one.

To the Grave-

Set in 1945 in England , another crime mystery case of Jefferson Tayte.

Last Queen of England

Researching in England, when a friend dies, he takes on his friends research .

Action packed, fast pace and very well written.

Another year has past and a new and exciting year for CGGS has started.

The first meeting will be held on Saturday, January 11th. As always the board will meet at 10:30 in the lower meeting room of the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center. Regular meeting and program will begin at 1:00 in the lower meeting room as well. Everyone is welcome to join us for a no host lunch  noon in the Basalt CafĂ©.

The first program of the year will be "Word Games- Words, Phrases, and Context".

Sandy Bisset will acquaint us on some words found in genealogy research that have some researchers baffled and uncommon names and descriptions that have different meaning because of the location in which they were used. Members are urged to bring their unknown or misunderstood words or phrases they have found in their research to be discussed. These may be occupations, geographical or location names, ect.

A new meeting schedule is now posted on the blog to the right for 2014.

Also a reminder that your 2014 membership dues is due and payable at the next meeting.
